be kind rewind

So after seeing this the other week I thought why not blog about it?

Basically it’s about a guy who accidentally becomes magnetized and destroys all the videos in a friends video store. They then try and re-make the films on their very low budget and become local stars because of it.

Okay so it is a film written and directed by Michel Gondry, who also directed one of my favorite films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and that’s why there is a serious aspect to it, going deep into how the art of film-making is dying and the industry is all about making money now. Now I went along to see this film thinking it’d just be a full on comedy film with a loose story and a lot of laughs, well I was happy that this was not the case. Although it is very funny at parts it is also serious in others.

I havn’t ever liked Jack Black, as a musician he was nothing special, as an actor it’s the same, but as an actor he suits being in the comedy role. I feel he let this film down a bit on the serious parts, but did well in the comedy.

Overall I thought the film was pretty good, but I think the acting brought it down. Maybe i’m just not used to Jack Black being in a serious role, but I think he should stick to being the idiot like usual. If you have some spare time and nothing better to go and see then this might be a good choice.

Superbad

So I went to see this film after hearing all the hype about it and I was disappointed. Okay so it was a semi-decent movie in itself, but all the hype i’d heard beforehand made me think that it would be an amazing film, not just an average comedy that you don’t need to pay much attention to.

Okay so the story if you don’t know it already is that two best friends in high school are invited to a party where they offer to get the alcohol as one of their friends has just acquired a fake ID. They think that if they get the alcohol then they will have a chance of sleeping with the two girls who are having the party. They get split up with their friend Fogell (the one with the fake ID) when he gets taken for a ride with some cops. After this hilarity ensues with them all trying to get alcohol for this party.

Now the acting was pretty good. It seemed to me that the actors have real chemistry from working together in the past and knowing each other as friends for such a long time.

As far as teen movies like this goes the script was pretty well written and moved along at a good pace.

To say the least I wasn’t that impressed, the hype was too much for what it was, but it was still an okay film to see if you are bored one night. Although I thought previous movies by the same people such as the 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up were much better.

When a Vagas performer decides that he wants to testify agains’t the mafia it turns out a lot of people want him dead, wouldn’t you know it? A conversation is heard and a hit is placed on Buddy Israel’s head of one million dollars, well it attracts the attention of the worlds best hitmen (and women) and puts his life in extreme danger, with the FBI getting involved and more plot twists we see a story unravel before our very eyes, quite an unbelievable one at that.

I really enjoyed this film. It has a good mixture of comedy, action, thrill and a great story that kept me excited until the very end. I saw this in the cinema when it first came out, and I was amazed that I hadn’t heard anything online about it from anyone else, but then I remembered that I hadn’t been online too much at that time, people had been talking, just I hadn’t been there to read it.

I remember coming out of the cinema and one of my friends being confused with some of the story, now this isn’t hard to do as the actual story behind it isn’t concentrated on in the film, until the very last scene when it all fits into place, now it can be confusing for some to get so much information and piece it together with the rest of the story all at once, but just thinking about it for a minute usually works, my friend understood once we explained it to them once more. Even without the main story this film is a great action flick, I think it needs to be recognised.

Now I bought it on DVD and I still find it an exciting film to watch. I have to watch the extras on the DVD soon, i’m sure they will be good. I’d recomend this film to anyone who can get their hands on a copy. If you like a good action film then this will keep your attention till the very end.

Stardust PosterThe story is that a man goes into a magical land to retrieve a fallen star (which is a person) but he then finds that he is not the only one who seeks the star, and has to keep her safe. He runs into many challenges along the way (including a cross-dressing sky pirate played by Robert De Niro who I think must have really needed the money to play this role) and his quest changes as he finds himself falling in love with the star.

I thought the movie was a very high budget film which concentrated too much on the special effects than the story itself. Although most other people I know thought it was an amazing story too. I say it was a very high budget film because they have so many great actors (who wouldn’t have come cheap at all), and so much cgi and special effects that would have come to a hell of a lot as well. The story seemed like a bunch of fairytales jumbled together, but it was interesting never the less.

I was surprised that the film ended as it did, it left no open ending for a sequel, which is quite strange for a film of this manor. Other than the surprise the ending was quite pleasant.
