3/5

So after seeing this the other week I thought why not blog about it?
Basically it’s about a guy who accidentally becomes magnetized and destroys all the videos in a friends video store. They then try and re-make the films on their very low budget and become local stars because of it.
Okay so it is a film written and directed by Michel Gondry, who also directed one of my favorite films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and that’s why there is a serious aspect to it, going deep into how the art of film-making is dying and the industry is all about making money now. Now I went along to see this film thinking it’d just be a full on comedy film with a loose story and a lot of laughs, well I was happy that this was not the case. Although it is very funny at parts it is also serious in others.
I havn’t ever liked Jack Black, as a musician he was nothing special, as an actor it’s the same, but as an actor he suits being in the comedy role. I feel he let this film down a bit on the serious parts, but did well in the comedy.
Overall I thought the film was pretty good, but I think the acting brought it down. Maybe i’m just not used to Jack Black being in a serious role, but I think he should stick to being the idiot like usual. If you have some spare time and nothing better to go and see then this might be a good choice.

Jack Black nothing special? Cover your mouth young man, I must disagree.
He even played Herod in a one off performance in Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway which I would have loved to see.
Where are you seeing these flicks in Dundee anyway? I remember seeing them down at the Canon near the Seagate bus station. That was a really nice old fashioned cinema.

Nah, I don’t think he’s anything special. His acting isn’t good at all, he should have stuck to his music. Plus he was being used (i’d say abused) to advertise this film, which I found a bit annoying.
I go to either the Odeon or the Cineword up by the kingsway, don’t think there are any cinemas in town anymore.
