rating starThe film follows a 35 year old games prgrammer, who seems to be really good at his job, just hasn’t got very far in life yet.

After his roommate spends all their rent money on Filipino hookers he gets thrown out of his house and has to find a new place to stay. After an incident with his best friends mum he ends up living with his grandma and her two strange roommates but to sound “cool” to his younger co-workers he pretends that he is staying with ‘three hot babes’. In the end his boss steals the game he is making (but has told no one about apart from his grandma) and tries to pass it off as his own. Thats the basic plot of the movie.

There is quite a lot of drug taking, nakedness and just plain weirdness in this film. For example there is a monkey which knows karate. I think I have said enough about that now. I will say that the film kept me laughing for a good portion of it.
I would recomend this film to anyone who likes a good comedy, if your a “geek” then you might like it even more.

hitcher pictureThe Plot is as thin as any other horror like this. This is one reason why I don’t like horror films, another is that I jump easily. So in this film two college kids go on a road trip during spring break to Mexico and on the way pick up a hitch-hiker (Sean Bean) at a gas station who ends up being a psychopathic killer, blah blah things happen and they end up running from both the psychopath and the police.

As far as horror films go, it was pretty good. It kept me watching at least, which is a good sign for me witha horror film. Sean Bean didn’t suit playing that role though, for a start he comes from here in the UK, and he can’t do a great American accent. But I have to say he did a good job of the role, i’m just used to him playing a different kind of role.

As killers go Sean Bean played a good one. I mean he got straight to the point in the film, telling them that he was going to kill them. After this his role consisted more of sneering and delivering one-liners which were sometimes pretty funny, but his character could have been so much better. I don’t blame this on him as an actor though, it’s more the character in the film being underwritten.

The film seemed quite long to me (although it wasn’t), after 45 minutes I was wondering what they can fill another 45 minutes with, as a lot had happened and it could have finished at that point. But they managed it and with quite a graphic few scenes at the end too.

If you like horror films then you will like this. If not then it’s a hit or miss film, I thought it was okay although I don’t like them generally. I only watched it as I was made to by my girlfriend.

Serenity dvd coverSerenity was the continuation of the cancelled series FireFly. I saw this in the cinema when it came out and it blew me away, it was the best film I had watched that year, and one of the best in my life - and it still is. At this time I hadn’t even seen FireFly and the film was still amazing. As soon as I could after I saw it I got FireFly and watched it, finally realising some of the jokes i’d missed in the film.

The story in Serenity is quite amazing. There is no clear good or evil sides, it follows the story of a band of fugitives just trying to make their way in a dangerous universe. Most people can relate somehow to this, okay so we won’t be flying around in space and we may not be fugitives, but most people are just trying to make their way in life by doing what has to be done.

The film is about this group of fugitives who will do any job - legal or illegal - just to put food on the table. In the crew are a doctor (Simon) and his sister (River) who are on the run from the government as River was a government experiment who can read minds amoung other things. During the film river shows the crew a past memory (which isn’t hers) of a planet far away. As it turns out the planet was created by the government and they put a chemical into the air to weed out aggression, instead people stopped doing anything and died, apart from 10% of them, who went insane and started eating people (this 10% are called reavers). In the end the crew have to spread the word that the goverment is responsable for these reavers but run into a few problems along the way.

Although the film has a serious storyline, it does have it’s humour, every so often there are jokes tossed about between the crew, which all adds to the characterisation which is possibly the best i’ve ever seen, I really cared about the characters in that film, even the ship (yes, I consider the ship to be a character).

There is a side love story in the film too (every good film has to have one), between the ship captain (Mal) and a companion (Inara), and also between the doctor (Simon) and the engineer (Kaylee). Both of these love stories follow on from the series and will make more sense if you have watched FireFly before the film.

There are rumours of a sequal because the dvd sales have made them so much money. A recent interview with the actor who plays Walsh told us all this:

“Everybody in the Firefly crew – and that includes the ones who died in the movie – are excited about the prospect of doing another,” he added.

So if there is a sequal, I will hopefully be there on the opening showing over here.

To conclude Serenity is a must watch film for anyone, even if you arn’t into sci-fi movies. If you havn’t seen it then I for one would recomend it, although you might want to watch the FireFly series before-hand so you will understand it much better.

War imageThe story is quite simple - After his partner Tom Wynne (Terry Chen) and family are killed by the infamous assassin ‘Rogue’ (Jet Li), FBI agent Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) loses his wife due to his obsession for revenge. Three years after the event he picks up Rogue’s trail again and it turns into a story about vengence, guilt and betrayal. In the mean time Rogue has his own plans, working for both the Triads and the Yakuza he creates a bloody crime war, his reason? Well you will have to watch the film now won’t you?

Although it is a fairly typical storyline, it still has it’s differences. There are some very clever plot twists in the movie which are hinted at before they are revealed. This doesn’t change that it is a typical action movie. But really anyone going to a film with jet Li or Jason Statham should know what to expect, high speed action, violence, etc. Now we have a second film with both of them and it doesn’t disappoint in that respect.

Overall I thought the film was great, great fight scenes, good acting, seemingly random women getting naked, what more could you ask for in an action film? Although I did think that it seemed much longer than it was, it only goes on for just over an hour and a half, I could have sworn I was in there for at least two hours. Nevertheless if you are a fan of action films, esspecially ones with Jet Li or Jason Statham in them then go see this film, you will love it, if not then you probably won’t like it.
